What the Diploma is

The Institute of Acoustics Diploma in Acoustics and Noise Control is a professionally recognised qualification that gives comprehensive training in the principles and practical application of acoustics and vibration. It is a one-year qualification, recognised internationally.

The course suits candidates from a range of educational and professional backgrounds. It provides a structured route into the acoustics industry, or progression within it, and can support progression towards professional membership of the IOA.

This intake is taught in Bangkok by KP Acoustics Research Labs (KPARL), the IOA-accredited course centre, in partnership with Geonoise (Thailand) Co., Ltd. and Acoustic Laboratory Thailand Co., Ltd., who provide the facilities and instrumentation for the practical sessions.

How it is delivered

Two intensive two-week teaching blocks in Bangkok give 20 days of face-to-face tuition from KPARL's academic and industry specialists. Sessions combine lectures and seminars with hands-on laboratory work using state-of-the-art equipment supplied by KPARL, Geonoise and ALT.

Between and after the blocks, candidates receive remote tutor support for coursework, revision and the independent research project, with online revision sessions throughout the programme.

Teaching and assessment dates

16–27 November 2026Block 1 — General Principles of Acoustics and the first part of Laboratory and Experimental Methods
8–19 February 2027Block 2 — Building Acoustics, Noise and Vibration Control Engineering, and completion of Laboratory and Experimental Methods
9–10 June 2027Two full examination days in Bangkok
October 2027Submission of the independent research project (remote supervision)

Attendance at both blocks is required, with assessed coursework completed between them.

Assessment

  • Assessed coursework completed through self-directed study between the teaching blocks
  • Practical laboratory exercises and written laboratory reports
  • Two full examination days in Bangkok on 9 and 10 June 2027
  • An independent research project with remote tutor supervision, for submission in October 2027

Entry requirements

There is no mandatory formal entry qualification. Candidates are expected to have a working foundation in:

  • Mathematics — scientific notation, logarithms, rearranging formulae and basic trigonometry
  • Physics — SI units, waves, velocity, energy, intensity and pressure
  • Word processing and spreadsheets
  • Using a scientific calculator

A Maths and Science Supplement is available for candidates who would benefit from refreshing this knowledge before the course begins.

All teaching materials, assessments, examinations and project work are in English. Candidates should have English-language ability equivalent to IELTS 6.0. A formal IELTS certificate is not required, but candidates may be asked to demonstrate equivalent competence during the application process.

Study commitment

The Diploma requires more than 300 hours of study across the teaching blocks, coursework, laboratory work, revision, examinations and the independent project. Candidates should consider this commitment carefully when planning the course alongside their employment and other responsibilities.

Course tutors

The course is delivered by experienced academic and industry specialists from KP Acoustics Research Labs, combining expertise in research, consultancy, testing and practical noise and vibration control. KPARL has delivered IOA-accredited courses for more than 15 years and offers one of the largest portfolios of accredited acoustics courses in the UK.

Where it leads

The Diploma provides a recognised route into, or progression within, professional acoustics and related disciplines: consultancy, noise and vibration, automotive, aerospace, manufacturing, architectural and building design, construction, environmental acoustics, occupational noise and vibration, underwater acoustics, electroacoustics and defence.

Please note

  • The course is subject to final approval of the Bangkok delivery arrangements and a minimum of eight fully paid participants.
  • Places are limited and early application is strongly recommended. Places are secured following acceptance and payment, with the course proceeding once the minimum cohort has been confirmed.
