Field measurement capability — the standards we measure to on site, and the instruments we use

Geonoise does site work with interpretation attached. Every number in one of our reports was measured under real conditions, at the real position, by a named international method, and explained by the engineer who signs the report — what it means for your project, your complaint or your case. This page lists the field-measurement standards we offer and the instruments we use, so that clients, EIA consultants and reviewers can check at once whether the work they need is within our scope.

We keep field work and laboratory work clearly apart. Testing of materials and products in a laboratory — absorption to ISO 354, the sound reduction index of a panel to ISO 10140 — is the work of the ALT laboratory under its own ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation. Geonoise works on site, with Class 1 instruments calibrated by an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited laboratory, and we do not sell the instruments or the measures we recommend.

Environmental and community noise

  • ISO 1996-1 and ISO 1996-2 — description, measurement and assessment of environmental noise, from short-term attended surveys to continuous monitoring stations
  • National Environment Board Notifications No. 15 (B.E. 2540) and No. 29 (B.E. 2550) and the nuisance-noise notification (B.E. 2565) — Leq 24 h, Lmax and the nuisance level, following the Pollution Control Department method
  • Measurement for EIA chapters and for EIA monitoring programmes — at the receiver positions named in the report, with weather and extraneous-source logs

Building acoustics

  • ISO 16283-1, -2 and -3 — field measurement of airborne, impact and façade sound insulation between apartments, offices and classrooms
  • ISO 3382-2 — reverberation time in ordinary rooms, and ISO 3382-1 for performance spaces
  • ISO 10848-2 — flanking transmission between adjoining rooms, for when the installed insulation falls short of the design value and the path has to be found
  • ISO 16032 — sound pressure level from building services in rooms (air-conditioning, pumps, lifts, pipework), engineering method, against the NC or NR design criterion
  • ISO 3822 — noise from appliances and fittings in water-supply installations, for water-noise complaints in residential buildings

Sound power and source identification

This is the work that answers which machine is how loud and where the sound leaves it — questions a sound level meter alone cannot answer.

  • ISO 9614-2 and ISO 9614-3 — sound power from sound-intensity measurement, scanning and discrete-point methods; usable on site with other machines running, and able to separate the sound power of each face of a machine
  • ISO 3747 — in-situ sound power by the comparison method with a reference source, for plant that cannot be taken to a test room and for checking a vendor's guarantee
  • ISO 11820 — in-situ insertion loss of silencers, because catalogue values are obtained in a test rig
  • 128-microphone acoustic camera — real-time acoustic imaging to rank sources on a roof, in a plant or across a building envelope, and to verify before and after a fix
  • In-situ absorption and transmission-loss measurement with a field probe, for materials already installed that cannot be removed for laboratory testing

Speech, rail and occupational

  • IEC 60268-16 — speech transmission index (STI / STIPA) for public-address and voice-alarm systems and meeting rooms
  • ISO 3095 and ISO 3381 — exterior and interior noise of rolling stock; EN 15892 — driver's cab noise; EN 12299 — ride comfort
  • Occupational noise-exposure assessment under the Department of Labour Protection and Welfare notifications, with sound level meters and personal dosimeters, signed by a licensed noise analyst

Vibration

  • DIN 4150-3 — vibration from construction, piling and blasting on structures, with online monitoring and alerts
  • ISO 10816 — machine condition from bearing and base vibration
  • VC curves and ISO 2631 — site surveys for vibration-sensitive facilities such as laboratories, MRI suites and electronics fabs, and human perception of vibration in buildings

Every instrument is calibrated by an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited laboratory, and the calibration certificates are appended to every report.

  • Class 1 sound level meters to IEC 61672-1, with field acoustic calibrators
  • Single-, dual- and multichannel sound and vibration analysis systems for simultaneous measurement at several positions

Field versus laboratory — who does what

Geonoise measures on site and interprets the result. The ALT laboratory tests materials and products in its test rooms under the laboratory's ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation — absorption to ISO 354, sound insulation to ISO 10140, silencer insertion loss to ISO 7235. Where a job needs both, for instance a panel tested in the laboratory and then verified after installation, we coordinate both sides through one point of contact, and Geonoise has no stake in the manufacturer whose product is being tested.

What you receive

  • A measurement report stating the standard, method, positions, times, source operating conditions and weather, complete to what the standard requires
  • The calibration certificate of every instrument used, appended to the report
  • Interpretation against the applicable criterion — not just a table, but whether it passes, why, and what to do next
  • Raw data in a form that can be re-examined when the other party or the authority asks for it
  • Signed by a named consultant, and where the law requires it, by a licensed noise analyst

FAQ

The standard I need is not on the list. Can you still do it?

Ask us. The list is what we measure routinely with instruments on hand. Some standards need a test room or dedicated equipment, and we will say plainly whether we can do it in full, in part, or whether it belongs in a laboratory — rather than accept the job and deliver something that does not meet the standard.

How is this different from hiring someone with a meter to read off a number?

The same number can pass or fail depending on where it was measured, for how long, under what conditions and against which criterion. The standard fixes all of that, and a report that does not state it is easily challenged. Our job is to measure by the right method and to explain what the result means.

When were your instruments calibrated, and by whom?

The main instruments are calibrated on a fixed cycle under our ISO 9001 quality system, by an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited laboratory. The certificate states the date and the uncertainty and is appended to every report. We also field-calibrate before and after every measurement.

Is Geonoise ISO/IEC 17025 accredited?

No. Geonoise is certified to ISO 9001:2015 for its consulting work. ISO/IEC 17025 is the accreditation of the laboratory that calibrates our instruments, and of the ALT laboratory for test reports issued within its accredited scope. We state this clearly because a wrongly claimed accreditation is the first thing a reviewer finds.

How many positions can you measure at once?

Our multichannel systems measure several positions simultaneously, which is needed for sound insulation between rooms, for separating the contributions of several sources, and for tracking several receivers at the same time. The right number depends on the job and is set at the quotation stage.

Can you work at night or at weekends?

Yes. Many environmental and nuisance measurements have to be made at night when the background is low, and some building measurements are only possible when the building is empty. We set the measurement window by what the standard and the criterion require, not by convenience.
