Rolling stock noise, vibration and ride comfort testing
Type testing is the last step, not the first. Most rolling stock noise problems are found — and are far cheaper to fix — during commissioning, long before a certificate is issued. Geonoise has measured metro and EMU vehicles in Thailand since 2022, with Class 1 instrumentation and the full standard suite.
What we measure
- Exterior noise to ISO 3095 — stationary, constant speed and pass-by
- Interior noise to ISO 3381 — saloon and passenger compartments
- Driver's cab noise to EN 15892
- Ride comfort to EN 12299, and whole-body vibration to ISO 2631
- Public address and speech intelligibility — STI to IEC 60268-16, on board and on platform
When to bring us in
- Commissioning support, before any formal test
- A vehicle that has failed a limit, or sits too close to one, and needs the source located
- Mitigation design, and verification after modification
- Pre-compliance measurement, so the certification test is not a gamble
- Design-stage prediction and target setting
How this fits with certification
Formal type-approval testing generally has to be issued by an accredited laboratory. Where that is required, we deliver the measurement alongside accredited certification partners. Where it is not — commissioning, fault-finding, mitigation, pre-compliance — you engage us directly.
Why an independent measurement
- We sell no vehicles, no materials and no systems, so the result is the result
- Class 1 instruments, calibrated by an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited laboratory
- A senior acoustic engineer on site, not a technician with a meter

FAQ
Do we need an accredited laboratory for this?
For formal type approval, usually yes, and we deliver that work alongside accredited certification partners. For commissioning, fault-finding, mitigation and pre-compliance measurement, no accreditation is required and you can engage us directly.
Can you measure at a depot, on a test track, or in service?
Yes. ISO 3095 pass-by needs a compliant site and we will tell you honestly whether yours qualifies before anything is booked.
Do you cover vibration and ride comfort as well as noise?
Yes, to EN 12299 and ISO 2631, with the same instrumentation campaign where the programme allows.
We are delivering a vehicle into Thailand. Where do we start?
Send us the programme and the standard you are being held to, and we will come back with a test plan and a scope.
